A Simple Celebration

Practice receiving the payoff while planning something else. Let’s use dinner as an example. Imagine lighting candles. How about buying some red dahlias for the table? Shape the napkins into swans or flowers. Could you give yourself a break from cooking and pick up some take-out? Read a short story aloud before dessert. What if you and your children sang a song or made a gratitude list at the table? As you’re imagining these things (or others you think up!), pay attention to the sensations in your body. How’s your energy? As I was writing them, I noticed how uplifted I felt. Gleeful and light. Voila: instant payoff.
